Steven Gerrard will not be rushed into decision over England future

Reports suggested Gerrard may use England’s press conference on Sunday to clarify his international future, amidst speculation he may retire to concentrate on his club commitments.

But the Liverpool midfielder dismissed reports that he is expected to announce his international retirement imminently, insisting he will take stock of the situation over the summer.

“There is no truth that I’ll be making any announcements within a week,” the England captain said.

“I think I need more time than that. I’ve spoken to the manager this morning and have asked him for some to consider my future, but I certainly won’t be rushing into any decision.

“I don’t feel like it’s right to make a decision now or in a week’s time.

“I’m still hurting very bad and broken over what’s gone on over the last couple of weeks, so I need to get away, get on holiday and basically clear my head before I make that big decision.”

Gerrard has made 113 international appearances and has represented England at six major tournaments since being given his international debut by Kevin Keegan at the age of 20.

The 34-year-old was asked if he was leaning one way or the other regarding his international future, but Gerrard revealed he is keeping an open mind over what he says is a “big” decision.

“Not at the moment, I need time,” Gerrard said when asked if he had a hunch about what his decision might be.

“I’ve agreed with the manager I’m going to speak to him in a few weeks’ time and I need to speak to numerous other people who I respect who will help me and guide me the right way to make my decision.

“But it is big and I will make it in due course.”

England were eliminated from the World Cup after suffering 2-1 defeats against both Italy and Uruguay.

It is the first time England have been eliminated in the opening stages of the football showpiece since the 1958 finals in Sweden and Gerrard believes England must learn from their experience in Brazil.

He added: “We’ve conceded four goals in two games. I think we’ve had five shots directly on our goal which does tell you the reality that we need to toughen up as a group.”
