Governor of Bank of Ghana speaks on resignation rumour

dr-kofi-wampah-620x4001Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah has denied media reports that he has resigned from his job.

The Scandal newspaper in its Monday edition reported that Dr. Wampah submitted a resignation letter on Wednesday, July 16.

However, the Governor exclusively told Joy Business that the publication is untrue.

In a terse text message, Dr. Wampah said, “It is not true.”

He added that the Bank of Ghana will issue an official statement to rebut the publication.

The Governor has come under intense pressure in the wake of consistent depreciation in the value of the country’s currency.

The Ghana cedi has lost about 30 per cent of its value to US Dollar and by a similar percentage to the British Pound.

This has resulted in a downward spiral in the economic indicators compelling government to revise downward its 2014 GDP, inflation, and deficit targets.

Fiscal policy measures introduced by the central bank are not yielding the needed results as the cedi now trades between 3.0319 and 3.0343 against the Dollar and 5.1730 and 5.1789 to British Pound Sterling.
