Full statement: Students demand immediate dismissal of Education Ministers

education ministerThe National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students  (GNUPS) are calling for the immediate dismissal of the Minister of Education and her deputy Samuel Okudezeto Ablakwa.

The educational sector is currently battling with some challenges, including the prolonged strike by the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG), lack of teaching and learning resources,  withdrawal of teacher and nursing trainee allowances, among others.

The Parliamentary Select Committee has declared its desire to meet with the leadership of POTAG to iron out outstanding issues regarding the payment of the research and book allowances.

But the two student bodies in a joint statement noted that they had lost faith and confidence in the ability of Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman and Okudzeto Ablakawa to resolve issues confronting the sector.

NUGS and GNUPS also expressed their displeasure about the “collapsing state of the school feeding programme.”

“Another disturbing issue of serious concern to us has to do with the ailing state of the Ghana School Feeding Programme due to government’s huge indebtedness to the caterers employed under the programme who are always heard crying over the roof top for their monies,” the statement said.

The two bodies have therefore announced their decision to embark on a demonstration at the end of July, to press home their demands for immediate solutions to the challenges.
