Importers and Exporters Association demand: We want to meet Prez. Mahama

President-MahamaThe  Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana says the group will only call off their intended strike if they meet the President, John Mahama.

According to the executive secretary of the association, Samson Awingobit Asaki, the members of the association are not willing to meet any Minister because several meetings with Ministers have been fruitless.

The Importers and Exporters Association has announced plans to embark on a three-day strike beginning July 27th over the central Banks Forex rules which they contend are hurting their business.

The depreciation of the Ghana cedi forced the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to institutes measures to halt the free fall.

These measures were however reviewed after it failed to achieve the intended results.

The association however says the revised measures have so far not alleviated he challenges they are facing.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Asaki insisted that their meetings with various Ministers have state have not addressed their concerns.

“They say they will take action but they have never taken action so we want to meet the President,” he said.

He pointed out that just as government swiftly intervenes when the various labour unions embark on strikes, it should take similar actions in their case.

He said the concerns of the association should not be taken for granted because “if the external bodies refuse to give us money, it is the importer who is paying so much.”

“We bring about 80 percent of Ghana’s revenue and I think we should not be taken for a joke,” he warned.
