Ekwow Spio-Garbrah faces appointments committee

spio-garbrahA former president of the Dominion University and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Christian Action Faith International Ministries, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, who has been nominated by President John Mahama as the Minister- designate for Trade and Industry, will be appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament today for vetting.

Mr. Spio-Garbrah, who benefitted from a recent major reshuffle by the President, is currently serving as a consultant to African Development Bank in far away Tunisia. He was a former Minister of Communications and Education under former President J.J. Rawlings during the first National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s tenure.

Many NDC supporters have hailed the inclusion of Spio-Garbrah in Mahama’s government as he is seen as an experienced politician who would be bringing to bear his wealth of experience and expertise to help turn things around in the face of serious challenges facing the government.

Interestingly, he is the only nominee who would be appearing before the Appointments Committee and that he is expected to be subjected to a grueling session – which might border on his political experience, professional expertise, his ‘subtle’ criticism of the late President John Atta Mills and John Mahama’s government and what he would bring on board to help salvage the sinking Ghanaian economy.

President Mahama has consistently been lampooned by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for appointing ‘inexperienced’ and ‘student’ ministers, which had resulted in the current situation the country finds itself.
