The suspect, Sulemana Mohammed, an apprentice mechanic, is said to have secretly entered the businesswoman’s room at about 9 p.m. while she was seeing off a visitor.
He remained there until 12 midnight.
At midnight, while the businesswoman was sleeping, Mohammed allegedly attacked her by hitting her head with an object. He then asked her to give him all the money she had.
The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the incident happened on September 8, 2014.
He said the victim reported to the police on September 11, 2014 that at about 12 midnight on September 8, she felt a sharp pain on her head and woke up to see a man standing over her with an object in hand.
He said the complainant continued that she gave Mohammed GH¢100 but he demanded more money and when the victim told him she had no more money, Mohammed allegedly tied her neck with a black waist belt.
He then covered her mouth with his hand to stop her from screaming while he raped her.
Suspect handed over to police
The Regional Police Commander said the victim stated that she told the suspect her husband’s money was in her wardrobe and when Mohammed started ransacking the wardrobe, she escaped from the room and scaled the wall to a neighbour’s house.
Mohammed is said to have fled after finding the money in the wardrobe.
The neighbour took the victim to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Through investigations, Mohammed was traced to the mechanic shop where he was undergoing apprenticeship and the owner handed him over to the police.
At the police station, Mohammed admitted the offence and revealed that he sneaked into the victim’s room at 9 p.m. and hid there till midnight.
