A 7-year-old girl has drowned in a galamsey pit at Apapam, a community at Kyebi, in the Eastern region.
The little girl, in the company of her siblings, was asked to fetch water from a nearby river when the incident occurred.
Kyebi Divisional Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Issaka, revealed that a pond created by the activities of ‘galamseyers’ had accumulated water and was left open at the time of the girl’s visit to fetch water at the river.
He said the little girl unknowingly slipped and fell into the pit.
She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Mr. Issaka indicated that the police were investigating circumstances leading to the death of the girl.
He said efforts were being made to get the traumatised mother of the girl to assist the police in investigations.
The rest of her siblings, according to the DSP, would also be quizzed in order to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.
“An autopsy will be conducted and galamsey miners who dug the pit will also be investigated and brought to book,” he added.
