School feeds pupils with maggot-infested food (PHOTOS)

Pupils at the Asuokor M.A school in the Akuapem North Municipality in the Eastern region are being fed with maggot-infested food under the Ghana School feeding Programme, Citi News has revealed.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) is a project to provide food to children in school.

The Management of the Programme has been struggling to provide quality food to school children under the Programme for sometime now.

A source in the school, who spoke on condition on anonymity told Citi News that “the ingredients used for cooking are very bad”

“The corn dough used for their banku  this morning was full of maggots…Can you believe that with the number of kids, they are giving just one sachet of the 25 grams of tin tomatoes to be used for close to 100 students in our school.I have been in the school for almost a year and the situation has been going on for sometime now,”he revealed.

He said efforts to get the District Cordinator of the Scheme to address the problem have proved futile.

He therefore called on government to address the problem.

When citifmonline.com contacted the headmaster of the school Benedict Cobbinah said, “”Nothing of that sought has come to my notice. I even had PTA meeting with the parents last Friday and nobody reported to me of that incident. I don’t normally inspect the food when it is cooked. We have a coordinator who is in charge of that so the lady normally goes there to find out how they are cooking because they want the best for the children.”

The management of the Programme, in June, indicated that it cannot guaarantee the quality and quantity of food caterers serve to school children under the programme.

This was because Programme owed about 5,000 caterers over GHC 100 million for the 2013/2014 academic year.
