Man caged over GH¢1 robbery

jailedSeth Obeng, an unemployed young man, was on Thursday remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court for robbing a victim of her GH¢1.

The accused, also known as Sherif, Alegey or Track One, is facing a count of conspiracy and two counts of robbery, charges he flatly denied.

Track One is said to have, at about 8pm at North Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra, on August 8, 2014, robbed one Mary Gyewua Akom of her Samsung mobile phone valued at GH¢250, a Bible worth GH¢40, a hand bag valued at GH¢20 and GH¢1.

Alegey is also alleged to have, at about 8pm at the same place and date, robbed Christiana Afua Nyarko of her GH¢2, two sachets of Rhizion and Vitamin C tablets.

At the trial of the case in a court, presided over by Francis Obiri, the accused was remanded into police custody to reappear on November 11, 2014.

Prosecuting ASP Kwabena Adu said a national service person and pupil teacher, both residents of North Kaneshie are the complainants.

He said the accused person, who is a resident of Gaskia Zongo, near Abossey Okai in Accra, and an accomplice, who is currently on the run, attacked the victims at Swan Lake and the Kaneshie Sports complex and robbed them of the aforementioned items. They were armed with a pistol and used an unregistered motorbike to perpetrate the crime.

ASP Adu stated that a witness in the case, a taxi driver, who spotted the accused person and his accomplice, said in an attempt to help arrest the two, he pursued them with his car to the police barracks where they abandoned the motorbike, a bag and a Bible.

Prosecution further averred that a report was lodged at the police station and on October 18, Sherif was arrested at his hideout at the Accra Post Office, where he was identified by the victims.

According to police, Track One, upon interrogation, mentioned one Joe as his accomplice, adding that the suspect is assisting the police to arrest his colleague.
