bimbila-620x400P0lice in Bimbilla in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region have arrested five persons in possession of large quantities of weapons and ammunitions.

The weapons included one short machine gun (SMG), one double barrel gun, four single barrel guns, one unserviceable cut gun, 732 AK 47 ammunitions, 43 G3 ammunitions and six AA cartridges.

According to the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the measure barring residents from carrying weapons was still in force in the area; and that accounted for the action of the police to enforce it.

The five suspects, whose identities could not immediately be established, are between the ages of 20 and 35 and are currently in detention in Tamale and Yendi to assist the police in their investigations.

ASP Tetteh disclosed that the Northern Regional Police Command was determined to enforce law and order in the area in view of the recurring chieftaincy disputes, and appealed to the residents to report suspicious characters to the police.

He reminded residents of Bimbilla and surrounding communities that the ban on weapon carrying was still in force and that persons caught violating that directive would be severely dealt with.

The PRO was unable to confirm when all the five persons would be arraigned before court, but hinted that it would be possible before the week runs out.

Meanwhile, there is uneasy calm in the area following the latest arrests by the security agencies, who were deployed to the area in the heat of an attack at the palace of Naa Dasana Andani Abdulai II by unknown assailants, which resulted in his death.

The interior ministry, incollaboration with the Northern Regional Security Committee (REGSEC), imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in the area until it was recently relaxed, with reports suggesting that the security situation had improved
