A brawl between a police inspector and a sergeant over entries in a station diary has led to the death of the inspector.

The sergeant has been arrested and interdicted for further investigation into the case.

The incident occurred at Bonyere in the Jomoro District in the Western Region last Monday, when a misunderstanding ensued between the suspect, identified as Detective Sergeant Cephas Yao Bediako and Inspector Jacob Saka, who was acting as the station officer at Bonyere Police Station.

Sergeant Bediako was said to have made entries in the station diary after he had returned from an official duty in Bonyere.

A police source said Inspector Saka requested to see the entries made by Bediako but he refused the request. This was said to have angered the station officer, and resulted in verbal exchanges between the two.

The sergeant was alleged to have held the station officer’s uniform, making it difficult for the inspector to breathe. In an attempt to free himself from the grip of the sergeant, Inspector Saka allegedly threw a hefty blow, which Sergeant Bediako dodged.

Inspector Saka then fell down.

The fall

The source said the elderly inspector recovered from the fall and attempted to throw another blow but was met with an equally heavy blow by Sergeant Bediako, which sent him to the ground.

Unfortunately, Inspector Saka could not get back on his feet. Onlookers and other junior officers at the police station, which is situated in the middle of the community, rushed Inspector Saka to the local health post but he was referred to Accra for further attention.

Inspector Saka was said to have died on his arrival at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after he had been referred there by the Police Hospital.
