School Principal demoted after misspellings found on school sign (PHOTO)

A New Jersey elementary school principal was demoted after misspellings appeared on a very obvious sign outside the school.

It was not immediately clear who placed the letters on a sign high above an entrance to Paterson’s Public School Number 20. But Antoinette Young is no longer principal.

The sign has the word “reports” misspelled as “reepor” and “December” misspelled as “Dicember.” The number “1” also appears backwards.

The sign- misspellings and all- was up for over a week before Paterson Board of Education member Corey Teague noticed and posted a picture of it on Facebook, CBS New Yorkreported Wednesday.

“How can we expect our children to learn how to spell when the administration can’t?”wrote Teague.

Scores of outraged parents also expressed their frustration over the spelling fail.

“This is unacceptable. And these are the people we trust to educate our children? My 2nd grader knows how to spell DECEMBER AND REPORT,” Terry James wrote on Facebook.

Teague said he only wanted to make sure a sign like that never appears in the district again, pointing out that just because they are an inner-city district, incidents like this should not be swept under the rug.

But after his outcry, principal Young was reassigned as vice principal to another school, CBS New York reported. The district did not specify the reason for the reassignment.

One parent, however, doesn’t think Young deserved to be reassigned.

“They don’t talk about all the good things she’s done with the kids,” Linda Martinez told the station. “We’re sad to see her go.”

The former principle was already being reviewed for unrelated performance issues,NorthJersey.com reported. The news outlet was unable to reach Young for comment.

Paterson education officials said a custodian arranged the letters on the sign and that it was placed above an entrance rarely used by staff members including Young.
