Kim Kardashian’s Marriage Advice: ‘Give It a Good Six Months Before You Commit’

Kim Kardashian’s ill-fated marriage to Kris Humphries may have only lasted 72 days, but she’s seemingly learned a lifetime of lessons from it.

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, which took place just days before she announced she was pregnant, the reality star opens about how she got to that point with her NBA player ex – whom she’s still trying to divorce 16 months later! – and reveals that it was younger sister’s whirlwind romance with her own basketball star that made her believe in the fairytale.

“I saw fast marriages like Khloe and Lamar’s and that was what seemed to work,” Kardashian tells the mag for its April issue. “[Now] I say give it a good six months before you commit. Feelings change, even if it seems so lustful.”

So, it makes sense that the 32-year-old is now with Kanye West, her friend for years before things moved from platonic to romantic in early 2012. Why did it take so long for sparks to fly?

“Sometimes you’re just not ready,” admits Kardashian. “A person could have it all, and you’re not ready for it all. But this is where I probably always should have been … [marriage] is something I know that we both want in our future, but I don’t have this sense of urgency about it. I have this best friend who understands me and helps me through all my tough experiences, and vice versa, you know? It just feels like this is it for me.”

Even though Kardashian had yet to announce her baby news at the time – the rapper dropped the bomb during a concert in Atlantic City at the end of December – she talked openly about wanting to start a family soon. “I’ve always said that I wanted kids, but I don’t think I ever would have been ready until now.”

Another hint she was expecting: Kim also backtracked on her judgment of older sister Kourtney, who has two children with her longtime boyfriend, Scott Disick. In 2009, when Kourtney was pregnant with son Mason, now 3, Kim was very vocal about her having a baby out of wedlock.

“I was like, ‘You’re not married! How could you do this?’” she recalls. “I was really firm and strict. But she was like, ‘Marriage isn’t what I want.’ And later, I realized she had a better family life than I did.”

And now, Kim’s following in Kourtney’s footsteps – and she expects long-lasting results. “I used to think, ‘Well, can you really have it all? The truth, the excitement, and the passion?’” she muses toCosmo. “Now I know you can.”
