A meter reader for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region was severely assaulted by a costumer for attempting to distribute ‘light bills’ to him.
The angry customer, according to Nsawam ECG Manager, Bismark Awuku, was outraged by the mere presence of the ECG official accusing him and the company of frequent power outages.
The ECG meter reader was at the location to deliver January 2015 bills to the customers.
Soups, fruits and several perishables in the refrigerators of the customers and his household had been destroyed following the unannounced power outages in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri environs.
Some months ago, residents in the communities thronged the district office of the power distributing company with perished food items, causing the Managing Director to flee from his office.
Thus, the intense anger build up led to the customer meting out heavy slaps to the face of the meter reader who was only identified as Edem.
He was subsequently rushed to the hospital for treatment after the assault.
Edem threatened to quit the job of meter reading if the assaults continue.
Police protection
Following the assault on their worker, the ECG said they would be needing police escort in delivering bills to customers.
