Would their threat heed to something? – Or it’s just a strategy to scare government after pulling down their wooden structures in the nation’s biggest slum area.
Displaced settlers at the Sodom and Gomorrah slum in Accra, mostly Northerners, have vowed to stage a ‘Boko Haram’ kind of attack in Ghana if they are not allowed to settle at their own-made ‘city’ marked by poverty and inferior living conditions.
The now homeless aggrieved migrants took to the Central Business District of Accra Monday morning to embark on a massive demonstration to register their displeasure at Saturday’s demolition of some structures at the slum area [Sodom & Gomorrah].
They have finally converged at the State House, demanding to see the president. Earlier, police reinforcement team with riot controlling equipment including tear gas, tried dispersing them by firing into the air at some point, but that did not stop the demonstrators from getting to their destination.
Boldly written on a placard by the demonstrators reads the inscription – “Before 2016 [election year], you will see Buku Harm [Boko Haram] in Ghana”.
Their demonstration violates the Public Order Act since no notice was served by the leadership of Sodom and Gomorrah to the police.
What led to the demonstration
Officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly together with some security services Saturday ended a planned demolishing exercise of some structures at the slum area.
The exercise saw hundreds of dwellers watch on as their illegal structures got pulled down, it came on the back of a hint President John Mahama gave midweek.
