Christian Council ask Prez. Mahama to state Ghana’s position on same sex-marriage

opuni_2The Christian Council of Ghana has charged President John Mahama to make a clear policy statement on the country’s position on same sex marriage.

General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, said Sunday President Mahama must break his silence on the issue because his predecessor – the late President John Mills — made clear his position on the issue.

The call by the Christian Council comes weeks after the United States legalized same sex marriages, triggering heated debate in some states and around the world.

The Christian Council believes government must also make clear its position on the matter in the light of the debate.

“Because it has become a legal issue, a constitutional issue, government must give the direction. The Office of the President and all the others must make a statement either to affirm Prof Atta Mills that nothing has changed; the statement Atta Mills made is the policy statement”, Rev Opuni-Frimpong said on Joy FM’s Christian talk show, A Walk With Jesus.

He said traditional and religious leaders must also make an explicit statement on the issue to give direction to the youth.

Meanwhile, the Council holds the view that same sex marriage is ‘unbiblical’.

“God’s principle for marriage, which is also in line with African cultural values, is between a man and a woman. This is supposed to be the foundation for every family, as prescribed by God. Therefore, for a man to marry a man and a woman to marry a woman is very ungodly and unnatural,” Rev Opuni-Frimpong had said.

He has urged Ghanaians to resist the temptation and influence from any country or individuals to legalise same sex marriage in the country.
