Ghanaians are happy with ongoing demolition – Okoe Vanderpuije

dr-vander-620x400The mayor of Accra Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije believes those against the ongoing demolition exercise in the capital are insignificant as compared to the majority who have hailed his laudable initiative and achievement.

According to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) boss, anyone who means well will hail him and is happy to have the backing of people from all walks of life.

“People are really happy with the demolition,” Vanderpuije told the media after another demolition in Avenor, Accra, Tuesday. “Majority of Ghanaians are happy.”

Vanderpuije, who is the reigning best mayor of Africa, said the demolition will cease once people stop building in water ways and at unauthorised places.

“There will be an end but the objective is to remove all illegal structures on waterways. The objective is to remove all illegal structures on drains and once we achieve those objectives we will stop. We are demolishing for the sake of the larger community.”

He added: “We have to put an environmental sanitation programme in place to ensure sanity but for now the demolition and desilting is going to help tremendously.”

The decision to clampdown on squatters in Accra and to demolish illegal structures in Accra was triggered by the June 3 fire and flood disaster which killed over 150 people.
