Commercial Drivers to embark on strike Monday

ghana-tro-tro-observers-are-worriedA group of commercial drivers calling itself Committed Drivers Association of Ghana, has given notice of a planned sit-down strike on Monday.

The drivers are protesting what they say is an overwhelming increment in insurance fees. A similar action over the same reasons by the drivers some months ago brought Accra to a standstill and left many passengers stranded.

The Ghana Insurers Association on June 8th, 2015 announced it had reviewed the price for third party insurance tariffs. Under the new policy, car owners can buy insurance on a short term basis at a cost of 1cedi 30 pesewas daily, monthly or annually.

The new development was the first time in five years premiums for motor insurance premium had been reviewed and increased.

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, the General Secretary of the Association, Richmond Kwaku Adjei said all commercial vehicles will not be allowed to move on Monday.

“We are going to have a sit down strike on 31st of this month and we want all our brothers from the North to the South, East and West to note that on that day, no car should come out. We are sitting down for one week if nothing is being done on the insurance issue.”
