Expect increase in transport fares – GPRTU

img_20841The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has planned to increase transport fares as fuel prices go up this early January.

The National Chairman of the GPRTU, Mr Kwame Kumah told Accra based Citi FM that they would discuss the margin of increment with other stakeholders before new fares are announced.
“They haven’t called us to tell us anything… we are resuming on Monday so I’m sure they will call us if we resume. No matter how it is the increment will come [sic].”

The cost of some petroleum products are to increase between 18 and 27 at the pumps beginning Monday January 4, 2016 following the passage of the Energy Sector Levy on December 23, 2015 by Parliament. The increase margin is one of the biggest in recent times.

The bill was introduced in Parliament on Monday, December 21 by the Finance Minister and passed after two days.

If government had not introduced the recent levy, diesel would have rather gone down by 10 percent.

Petrol would have been reduced by some 5.5 percent per liter at the pumps but the levy has triggered an increase by at least 27 percent.
