Fire guts Takoradi Kokompe (PHOTO)

Takoradi-Kokompe-620x400Ravaging fire gutted a section of Takoradi Kokompe in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region yesterday destroying items worth thousands of Ghana cedis, including four vehicles, but no casualty was recorded.

Takoradi Kokompe is an area where most auto mechanics, spares parts dealers and other artisans in the metropolis ply their trade.

About four vehicles that were brought to the area for servicing were entirely burnt in the inferno.

The blaze, which started at about 9:30 am on Wednesday, according to residents, also destroyed several structures.

However, the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.

It is the second time in a little over two years that fire has gutted the area.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived on the scene on time with three fire tenders and managed to put the situation under control.

An eyewitness, Kwesi Kum, speaking to the media, said he heard explosions amidst thick smoke from some of the shops.

As to what caused the fire, officials of the Fire Service had yet not concluded their investigation, but Kum suspected it was caused by an electrical fault.

Some traumatized shop owners who arrived at the scene looked on helplessly as the fire was raging on and wept uncontrollably.

Some of them indicated that they went for bank loans for their businesses and wondered how they would get money to pay back the money or cater for their families.
