African Students under ‘house arrest’ in Bangalore

African students in Bangalore, India, are living in fear of their lives as violence erupts in the city as a result of an accident that occurred on Sunday night. The accident which involved a Sudanesse student, Mohammed Ismail, resulted in the death of one woman who has been identified as Shabana Taaz, a home maker and a resident of Ganapathinagar
This led to several unrest, with four African students who are pursuing different courses at Acharya Institute of Technology and Saptagiri Engineering College on Hesaraghatta Main Road being assaulted by the locals.
According to information reaching Skyy Power FM from the Ghanaian community in Bangalore, one of the injured has been admitted to KC?General Hospital in Malleswaram while the three Tanzanian students are being treated at a private hospital on Hesaraghatta Main Road.
Information reaching us indicate that around 7 pm on Sunday, Ismail attended a party at his friend’s house and was returning in a car which collided with three bikes near Andhra Bank at Dasaharalli on Hesarghatta Main Road. Ismail, according to the police, was subjected to medical test to ascertain if he was drunk and had consumed any banned substance.
Taaz’s husband Sanawulla K. told Deccan Herald he was walking with his wife along the road when the accident occured. “We were walking along the roadside when the accident took place,”.”The car moved in a zig-zag manner and hit me. I fell down and suffered injuries on my hands and back. I turned back to see my wife. She was tossed up in the air. She fell down, came under the car’s front wheel and died on the spot,” he stated.
Police say Ismail was chased by the residents, and beaten up.
“Residents chased the car, caught Ismail and thrashed him before setting his car ablaze. A few others spotted another car with two boys and a girl inside. Presuming they were Ismail’s friends, the locals dragged them out of the car and thrashed them. Later, they set that car also on fire”, said the police.
As a result, educational institutions in the Hesaraghatta area have been compelled to force their students to stay indoors the whole of today, Monday, February 1, to prevent further injuries and damage to the students.
