Western Region: Residents of Shama raise concerns over project cost

copy_0_Ghana-Moree-street-marketSome residents of Shama District in the Western Region have raised concerns over some recent projects in their district. They lament there have been a lot of inconsistencies in the cost involved in these projects most paramount among them are a 3 and 6 units’ classroom blocks at Fawomnye and Aboso  which cost 124,691.67 and 85,591 Ghana Cedis respectively.

Residents have expressed discontent and doubts about these figures and expect authorities to explain the factors that may have accounted for these incongruities.

Speaking with Wisdom Ahiawodzie, the Works Engineer for Shama District, on Skyy FM’s Jolly Breakfast Show on Wednesday, he disclosed the processes involved in procuring a project varies with each contractor and it takes this understanding to fairly appreciate the figures that have been released to the public.

Mr. Ahiawodzie explained the 6 units block was a mere renovation rather than a new project unlike the 3 units block. He also added the project was awarded back in 2010 and it was the lowest evaluated project.

He mentioned different contractors and tendering processes, the location, the time frame and the scope of work involved in a project are all contingencies that are factored in the costing of a project.

The Assembly believes in transparency and this explains why the figures have been released for public scrutiny he said.

Skyy Power FM is following up on the story, there’s still more to come.
