Messi is best footballer of all time – Pope Francis

His Holiness is a big football fan and was asked to choose between Pele and Diego Maradona – instead he said Messi

But the 79-year-old gave a clear message of who he thinks is the best ever.

During a lunch break for a World Youth Day gathering in Krakow, Pope Francis was asked: “Who is better, Maradona or Pele?”

He answered: “For me, Messi.”

No further explanation needed, the Pope prefers the Barcelona superstar.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Pope Francis is a huge football fan and a lifelong fan of San Lorenzo.

However, his support has not turned into more titles for the club.

They have won 15 Primera Division titles in their 108-year career, but only four since the mid-1970s.

The last came in 2013.

Messi will be hoping for some divine intervention ahead of the new season after a difficult summer.

The 29-year-old missed a penalty in the Copa America defeat to Chile as he lost a fourth major international final.

That miss prompted him to retire from the international game.

Soon after, Messi was sentenced to a jail term by the Spanish authorities for tax fraud – although he is highly unlikely to end up behind bars.

To compound his misery, Messi had to watch rival Cristiano Ronaldo not only win the Champions League with Real Madrid, but see the Portuguese lead his nation to Euro 2016 glory in France.

Luis Enrique’s team start the defence of their La Liga crown against Real Betis on August 20.
