Some irate youth said to be galamsey operators in Obuasi on Wednesday went on rampage destroying officer, posters, banners and billboards of the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Chanting “no galamsey, no votes”, the demonstrators destroyed windows, TV decoders, billboards, plastic chairs and other properties they could lay hands on at the premises of the NDC’s Obuasi office. According to Peace FM’s Obuasi Correspondent Stephen Sekyere, the galamsey operators staged the protest march over a quit order given them by the Minerals Commission in connection with their activities in the AngloGold Ashanti concession in the area. The miners were to vacate the concession immediately or be forced out by Monday, 10 October, 2016. The Commission, in collaboration with the Movement Committee, fashioned out modalities to relocate the illegal small-scale miners from AGA’s concession. Meanwhile, there is said to be a heavy Military presence in Obuasi to restore calm. See pictures below |
