NDC suspends campaign in Kumasi to mourn queen mother of Ashanti Kingdom

storyThe ruling National Democratic Congress has suspended all campaign activities in the Ashanti region as part of measures in mourning the departed queen mother of the Ashanti kingdom.

The Chief of Staff Julius Debrah made the announcement Friday when he led a government delegation to the Manhyia palace to commiserate with  the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu.  He was accompanied by  the deputy NDC general secretary Koku Anyidoho who signed the book of condolence on behalf of the ruling party.

The mother of the Asantehene Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II died on Tuesday November 16.

The 109-year-old queen reportedly  died in her sleep.

She reigned for 39 years and saw the days of Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, who reigned from 1970 to 1999.

Nana Afia Kobi was enstooled in 1977 as the 13th queenmother of the Asante Kingdom since 1695 after the late Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II who reigned from 1945 to 1977.
