We don’t want sugar-coated words – Chief to Prez. Mahama

Chiefs in the Bolgatanga Traditional Area have called on President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his promises to the residents of region and not resort to sugar-coated words to convince them to vote for him in the upcoming polls.

According to the acting President of the Bolgatanga Traditional Council, Naba Johnson Awuni Azebire, the proposed Bolgatanga Airport and the Bolgatanga-Bawku Road, which the President promised was going to be completed soon, had been abandoned after the sod cutting ceremony in July 2016.

“There are a few things that we think should have been done by now, for example the airport which has been attempted severally, but still not seen progress. One other issue is the Bolga-Bawku Road, yes we know there are a lot to be done…but we think the Bolgatanga-Bawku is a major issue and if this is not done, we cannot say all is well with the Upper East Region…we have seen some asphaltic work on our town roads. We hope you will not tell us that things are going on, but will really be done and completed.

“We want the President to consider sending feeding grants to the secondary schools so that the children will continue to stay in school and learn.”

The chiefs, through Nana Awuni Azebire, asked the President to bring development to the area if re-elected.

The President, who is the Upper East Region as part of a three-day campaign tour, reiterated government’s commitment to completing the Bolgatanga-Bawku Road, among others.

President Mahama conspicuously avoided the issue on the release of feeding grants to Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Upper East region in his address.

According the President, a lot of projects would be executed in the area during his second term of office.

“We will revive some ‘dead’ public institutions, State Transport had almost collapsed, but just three four weeks ago I presented them with 50 new buses so that they can revamp their services and I am sure those buses have started travelling to Bolga.”

He said the Wa Airport is set to be completed and that government was considering the construction of two new airports- one in Bolgatanga and Cape Coast.

“I know that a team from here has for the first time qualified for the Premier League, we don’t have a standard stadium in Bolgatanga, but if you look at the manifesto of the NDC, we have said that within the next four years, we are going to build stadiums like we built in Cape Coast, and Bolgatanga will have one.”
