Chiefs and elders of Winneba are threatening to vote against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if their flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo does not apologise for calling President Mahama “Simpa Panin”.
According to them, the term which literally refers to an elder who sits unconcerned for wrongs to be committed is derogatory to both the president and the Effutu traditional area.
The Tufohene of Effutu, Neeyi otubua sripi II revealed this at a news conference at Winneba which is also called Simpa, Tuesday.
The NPP leader while addressing party supporters at Hwidiem in the Asutifi South Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Regionat berated President John Mahama for failing to reprimand some ministers he described as violent.
Nana Akufo-Addo referred to the President as ‘Simpa Panin’ who is supervising the looting of state coffers by his own appointees at the Detriment of Ghanaians.
But Neeyi Otubua Sripi II, said the NPP leader has incurred their wrath for using the name of their town in the negative sense.
“Nana erred, we see his comment as an insult and one which is meant to disgrace us. We want him to acknowledge that he’s offended us and that he should come and apologise. Just as in the case of Tuobodom, when one realizes that he’s offended a town, that person goes and renders an unqualified apology and then it settles the matter” he stressed.
They have therefore given Nana Akufo-Addo 48 hours to apologise or face their wrath ahead of the December 7 general elections.
He added: “Nana’s comment was played on air to the hearing of many people. Whether he said it a long time ago or not, is irrelevant. He’s insult a group of people called Effutu’s as Simpa Panin. So when your attention is drawn to it, you come back and see to make amends and render apology when necessary, then the matter closes. The public should stop making such comment. It should be a dead thing, never to be resurrected”Neeyi Otubua Sripi II noted.
