After fleeing war in Syria, chocolatier Essam Hadhad and his family settled in Canada after three years as refugees. For him, getting back to work meant getting his life back on track.

Essam Hadhad made a career from chocolate in Damascus, Syria, but was forced to flee when his family’s chocolate factory was bombed during the country’s civil war.

After spending three years in Lebanon as refugees, the Hadhad family finally made Canada their permanent home in 2016. Hadhad reopened his chocolate business in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, in August.

He says that working – creating the sweet treats that bring happiness to his customers – was instrumental in getting his life back on track.

“As soon as I got back to work I started feeling better and my life went back to normal”.
