Speaker of Parliament Aaron Mike Oquaye will deliver the 60th independence anniversary lectures scheduled for Friday.
The event will coincide with the 70th anniversary celebration of the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), Ghana’s first political party. This was announced on Wednesday by Vice Chairman of the Anniversary Committee Abu Jinapor, who is also a Deputy Chief of Staff. The year-long 60th anniversary began on March 6, 2017 with a budget of GH¢20 million. Given his experience, Professor Oquaye is expected to expound the ideals that led to the formation of the UGCC, from which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) derives its fount.
A memorial and thanksgiving service is expected to be held in Saltpond, in the Central Region, on Friday to mark the formation of UGCC. That party was founded on August 4, 1947 at the instance of Gold Coast merchant Pa Grant. Ghana’s 60th anniversary is being marked on the theme: ‘Ghana, 60 years on, mobilizing for the future’.
