In the early hours of Monday, Police brought to halt a birthday bash for a female celebrant and her other well wishers in a growing slum following their arrests.
Out of the 156 suspects booked, 45 are females, comprising 10 Nigerians and a Liberian within the age range of 19 to 51 years. The rest, who are males, are within the age bracket of 18-40 years.
The exercise forms part of the Accra Regional Police Commander’s move, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr George Alex Mensah, to rid the metropolis of criminals, who are terrorising the citizenry with their unscrupulous activities.
According to the Accra Regional Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Effie Tenge, police proceeded to Redco Flats based upon Police Intelligence that there was a growing slum in the area, where criminals were lodging and engaging in nefarious activities.
She noted that police discovered that some of the structures were serving as brothels.
Apart from the Regional Command’s aim to rid the city of criminals, the swoop was also embarked upon after numerous reports from residents within Adenta, Madina, Abokobi and its environs of consistent armed robberies, car and phone snatching, among others.
Police retrieved three motorbikes, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and sharp instruments (knives and scissors).
She appealed to the general public and persons within Adenta, Madina and Abokobi who have suffered any recent attack to quickly report to the Accra Regional Police Command to assist in identifying the arrested suspects.
She detailed that the suspects will be screened and those found culpable will be prosecuted accordingly.
