Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Anthony-Nsiah Asare says contractors will soon resume work to complete all abandoned health facilities in the Ashanti Region.
Work has stalled for three years on six hospitals in the region.
These are the Kumawu, Fomena, Bekwai, Konongo, Sewua and Tepa hospital projects.
The hospitals, when completed, will ease pressure on existing health centers in the area.
The 60-bed capacity project which has been abandoned at Konongo, for instance, will serve about ten communities when completed.
But weeds have taken over the facilities after contractors abandoned the sites.
Runoff water has also washed away the sand causing erosion along the edges of the facilities.
The progress of work since a sod was cut for the commencement of the project has been estimated to be 40%.
The story is no different at the Kumawu, Fomena and Bekwai District hospitals which have a 120-bed capacity.
Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare who is on a three-day of the Ashanti region to assess the state of the projects expressed worry about the delay in their completion.
He says the Service will work with the Health Ministry to ensure the speedy completion of those projects.
Dr. Nsiah Asare believes that the completion of the projects will accelerate healthcare delivery within the areas they are situated.
He indicated that the Service would also work with the local Assemblies to make roads leading to such facilities more accessible.
Commenting on the ‘No Bed Syndrome’ mantra, theDirector-General assured his outfit would put proper systems in place to end such occurrences.
He added that the completion of abandoned health facilities in parts of the country would also curtail the ‘No bed syndrome’ issue.
The facilities when completed will also provide accommodation for health workers who will be posted to work there.
The team on tour included; personnel from the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service and Chief Executives of the respective districts and municipalities the projects are located.
