Escaping cell inmate shot dead

A 27 year old Fulani herdsman was on Saturday shot and killed by the police in an attempt to escape from custody with three others  at the Nsuta Police Station in the Techiman Municipality.

The deceased Abdul Raman Osman was remanded by a court in Techiman with three other suspects, namely Ibrahim Issah, 25, Adam Issah 19, Kwaku David who were involved in cattle theft and were on court bail, but could not meet the bail conditions and so they were placed under the custody of the Nsuta Police Station.

Chief Inspector Augustine Kinsley Oppong, the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations office (PRO) when contacted confirmed the incident.

He explained that Police Sergeant Joseph Boyele at the counter went to serve the suspects with water, which was a normal practice for suspects in every police cell, but the culprits pulled the door from behind, attacked the officer and took to their heels.

Chief Inspector Oppong said Osman being the last to escape jumped to the counter searching for the place where the police riffles were kept to pick some before escaping, but luck eluded him when he was shot through the back by the police sergeant and he died instantly.

He said the body of the deceased had been conveyed to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital for preservation and autopsy, whist the police was investigating to pursue the escapees from their hideaway.

Chief Inspector Oppong appealed to the public to assist the police with the necessary information that would lead to the arrest of the three escapees.
