An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 38-year-oldman to a fine of GH¢ 3,600.00 for stealing GH¢ 10,000.00 belonging to his employer.
He will spend 24 months imprisonment in default.
Eric Allotey had denied the offence but was found culpable.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Cletus Abadamulora told the Court presided over by Mrs Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye that Allotey was a Marketing Representative of the Africa Mills Company Limited, a rice distribution company located in Accra.
On September 9, 2016, Allotey was assigned to convey 800 bags of 25 kilogrammes rice valued at GH¢ 67,500.00 from Tema to Takoradi.
He then rented a DAF truck with the registration number GT 2048 D but claimed the vehicle had a flat tyre around the Fiesta Royal Hotel, near the Company’s office.
The Prosecution stated that the convict failed to report to his office but abandoned the vehicle loaded with the rice and went home to change his cloths, which he claimed were wet as a result of the rain.
According to him, he came back later only to find out that the truck had disappeared from where it was supposed to have been parked.
DSP Abadamulora said the company’s own investigation discovered that Allotey had collected GH¢ 58,837.00 from the company’s debtors and used it without the employer’s consent.
He said the Managing Director then made a formal complaint to the police which led to the arrest of the convict.
Allotey, when questioned denied stealing both GH¢ 67,500.00 and GH¢ 58,837.00.
During proceedings the Court disclosed that GH¢ 10,000.00 had been stolen.
