KNUST Hall Conversion: Hearing of injunction adjourned

A High Court in Kumasi has adjourned to Thursday the hearing of an injunction application against the management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology by Alumni of the Unity Hall.

This is in reaction to the decision to convert the male hall into a mixed one.

The adjournment is to allow lawyers for the plaintiffs to respond to the university, which has also filed another application opposing the plaintiff’s application.

The lawyer for the plaintiffs, George Tetteh Wayo, told the court that his clients were served with the new application only today [Wednesday], hence their inability to respond for the hearing to go ahead.

Speaking to journalists, the Lawyer, Tetteh Wayo, said he is convinced justice will be served in the matter.

“Ordinarily, we need to respond, we need to have a look at what is in the opposition, we have the right to respond to issues they have raised in the opposition, and because we were served today [Wednesday], the court thinks that the proper thing to be done, is for the plaintiff to look at what is in the Affidavit in opposition and when we are done apprising ourselves with what is in there, we will be able to know which point we can also counter or raise by tomorrow [Thursday],” he said.

All traditional halls of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been converted into mixed halls.

The halls include the all-female hall, Africa Hall.

This means that, with effect from the 2018/19 academic year, all six halls of residence of the University have been converted into mixed halls.

This decision is under “the University’s policy of expanding access to female students remain unchanged.”

“In line with the University’s policy of periodic review of Residential Accommodation for students, it has been decided that effective the 2018/2019 Academic year, all the six (6) Traditional Halls of Residence namely, Independence Hall, University Hall,  Africa Hall, Republic Hall, Unity Hall and Queen Elizabeth II Hall would be designated as mixed Halls.

The Alumni of the Unity Hall also known as Katanga have vowed to resist the conversion of the hall.
