Uber removes driver accused of attacking rider

Ride-hailing firm, Uber, has removed the driver who was accused of assaulting a passenger after a dispute over a fare.

Uber, according to a statement, took this decision as it investigates the incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening.

The statement from the spokesperson for Uber West Africa, Fransisca Uriri, described the incident as regrettable.

“This is a regrettable and concerning incident, and we have reached out to the rider to offer our support. Violence is not tolerated on the Uber app, and the driver has been removed from the app while we investigate the matter.”

The Dansoman police have confirmed they are investigating the allegations, and Uber has said it will be “on hand to assist local law enforcement in their investigation.”

The victim’s ordeal

The victim narrated that “the fare on his screen was GHc9.83 so I took out money to give to him and he didn’t understand why the fare was GHc9.83. He did his calculation and I was like no, I am not going to pay you that.”

After spending about ten minutes arguing over the fare, Nana said she decided to leave and pay the driver the GHC 9.83.

It was at this point the driver allegedly attacked her until her neighbors came to her rescue.

“I got down from the car because I had given him the money. Immediately I got down from the car, he grabbed me from behind, and started dragging me and strangling me. He kept beating me and there was no one because it was midnight. I started screaming for help and immediately he realized that people were coming out, he just went to his car and sped off,” the victim said.
