Police raze cannabis farm at Nkurakan

Police in the Eastern Region have destroyed a cannabis plantation at Nkurakan in the Yilo Krobo district.

The Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit undertook the destruction with assistance from police at Nkurakan following a tip-off.

Police suspect Nkurakan, Huhunya, Boti, Oterkpolu, Asesewa, Somanya and other villages within the Upper Manya, Lower Manya, and Yilo Krobo municipalities have become safe havens for the cultivation of Indian hemp.

DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Public Relations Officer for the Police Service in the Eastern Region, said the owner of the farm was also arrested.

“On 26th August at about 2pm, men from the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit from Koforidua together with their colleagues at Nkurakan acting on intelligence proceeded to a suspected cannabis farm which is about an acre. Upon arrival, the team met suspect Atta Kuma Francis who resides in a wooden structure situated in the middle of the weed plantation.”

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted ownership of the land, farm and other exhibits including a big raffia bag and a bucket containing dried leaves also suspected to be Indian hemp after a search was conducted in the wooden structure.”

“Fire was set into the plantation under a  careful observation with pictures taken after the exercise. Other exhibits will be forwarded to the forensic laboratory in Accra, and the suspect is in our custody being prepared for court,” he narrated.
