Do more to fight corruption – Merkel urges Ghana

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel wants Ghana to do more in the fight against corruption.

She said although Ghana is taking steps to stop corruption, it must put in more effort to root out the canker.

Speaking at a meeting with President Akufo Addo at the Jubilee House on Thursday as part of her one day visit, Angela Merkel said though the country’s prospects look bright, more should be done to curb graft.

“When we speak about corruption, there is still room for improvement. We can work together to do so, that is also one of the reasons why with regards to the compact we have with Africa, we are paying attention to the fact that certain tax structures are transparent,” Angela Merkel said through an interpreter.

Angela Merkel is in Ghana for the first time as part of her 3-day West Africa visit aimed at boosting investment in the region that is a major source of migrants heading towards Europe.

She is being accompanied by a Federal Minister and a high-level business delegation to boost business ties.

She revealed in her interaction with President Akufo-Addo that automobile giant, VW is looking to establish a car assembling plant in Ghana.

The German leader first stopped in Senegal, and will continue on to Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and one of the world’s top oil producers.

Merkel would later join a panel discussion on a €100million compact agreement for Africa which Ghana will be a beneficiary.

It is the first visit of a German Chancellor to Ghana since 2004.
