NTC To New Teachers: ‘Submit To Exams Or You Can’t Teach In Ghana’

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has served notice new teachers who refuse to sit for next week’s license  examination cannot work in any school in Ghana.

The examination for the teachers begins next week Monday September 10.

Applicants expected to pay a registration fee of GHc220 for the exam in all Colleges of Education.

The examination is for all teachers who hold the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) or a post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) who want to be employed by the Ghana Education Service.

According to the National Teaching Council, the purpose of the licensing examination is to enable qualified teachers to acquire a professional license to ply their trade.

The teachers have been protesting the decision to be tested before being to teach since they have already undergone training.

The protesters, calling themselves Friends from Colleges of Education, have said they have not been given any orientation and course materials to equip them for the newly introduced examinations.

Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the NTC Dennis Owusu said it is in the interest of teachers to take the exams.

“Nothing has changed at all. We are writing the licensure exams from the 10th to 12th of September. We are expecting 15,000 to 20,000 teachers to write the exams. Those who refuse to the exams will not be able to teach in any Ghanaian classroom because GES cannot recruit you”.

The introduction of the licensing examination was met with some agitation by some teacher associations.
