Painter remanded over Defilement

Audience at an Accra Circuit Court had the shock of their lives when a 30-year old painter, who is being held over a charge of defilement, made some revelations before the Court.

Divine Azunu, who pleaded not guilty, told the court that the complainant was aware that the he was in a relationship with the 15-year-old victim.

Azunu said, “The complainant is aware that I am in a relationship with the victim and she normally sends the victim to me. The complainant fell sick and was admitted at the hospital. At the hospital, the complainant called me so I was remitting the victim.”

Azunu admitted in court that he has had sex with the victim before and wondered why he was in court and being accused of having sex with the victim.

The court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku has remanded Azunu into Police custody to reappear on September 18.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire said the complainant is the mother of the victim. The victim and her mother reside at Okpoi Gonno, near Spintex, Accra and accused resides in the same area.

Chief Inspector Atimbire said last year, the complainant detected that Azunu was having illicit affair with the victim and warned him.

On August 29, this year, at 1900 hours, the victim left the house to an unknown place but at about 0100 hours, the complainant had information that the victim was with Azunu.

Prosecution said the complainant sought the assistance of the Police Patrol Team and they proceeded to the house of the accused person.

The Police forced opened the accused person’s door and found the victim on the accused person’s bed.

During investigations, prosecution said the victim admitted that she and the accused person had been in a relationship since 2017 and they have had sexual intercourse on several occasions.

A medical form was issued to the victim to seek medical attention.

Prosecution said Azunu in his caution statement admitted having carnal knowledge of the victim.
