Pedestrians ‘forced’ to pick litter at Circle for walking on lawns

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) task-force at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange on Monday morning forced some pedestrians who used unapproved routes to pick litter around the interchange.

Hanson Agyemang reported that some pedestrians walked through unauthorized places such as the lawn area under the interchange, and were forced to pay a fine or pick litter.

Offenders who were caught were initially charged GHC 50 as fine.

In an interview, Richard Mensah, Executive Secretary of the Task-force, explained that the action was taken since the Ghc50 spot fine has not deterred pedestrians.

“What we are doing is that, when we get you passing on the lawns there was a spot fine of Ghc 50, but this time around we have realized that people are willing to pay the money so they also want to reluctantly pass through the lawns. Passing though the lawns or unauthorized places we will make you sure you pick around wherever you are walking to serve as a deterrent to other people”.

Agenda to make Accra Africa’s cleanest city’ on course – AMA boss

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has said that the vision of  President Akuffo-Addo to make Accra the cleanest city by the end 2020 is on course.

He said the achievement will require the collective effort of citizens and all stakeholders.

“It is a vision which is achievable and doable when collectively we commit to it. It is the responsibility of all of us. …Once we have bought into the vision of the president and all of us are working towards it, we could possibly achieve it probably even before the end of the first term of the president, and I believe that we are doing so well,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo in April 2017 promised to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of his first term.

The ambitious plan comes in the face of worsening sanitation crisis in the nation’s capital, Accra, with city authorities struggling to deal with the situation.
