The hue and cry about the poor salary of some radio Disc Jockeys (DJs) in the country has come up for discussions. Whilst some blame Chief Executives of radio stations for exploiting some of the DJs, DJ Mike, born Michael Gyamfi is blaming the DJs for poor negotiations.
According to the celebrated DJ Mike who works with Radio Maxx in Takoradi, “You can’t tell me you just went to work with a radio station without negotiating what is due you. So the DJs should stop complaining about poor salary and blame themselves for poor negotiations with the radio managers.”
In his (DJ Mike) view, everyone is paid what they negotiated for so the social media discussions on how bad the DJs are paid should also ask the DJs how much they accepted to take as salary. “I know one DJ who moved from one radio station to Radio Maxx and before he came, he told the Manager that he wants accommodation, a salary amount and some incentives. The Manager agreed and he moved to Radio Maxx. You think he didn’t negotiate before coming, same with others too, they negotiate before going so if you are given an amount of GHc200 that is what you negotiated for” DJ Mike told www.233times.net.
It is revealing to know that, some DJs take as low as GHC200 ($42) as monthly salary and others as high as GHc4, 000 ($833).
