Several months after government’s intervention to save the three public psychiatric hospitals in the country, investigations indicate that, the Accra Psychiatric Hospital is still broke.
According to the Chief Psychiatrist, Dr Akwesi Osei, the plight of the hospital has not improved despite several meetings with the Health Ministry.
“[In] The last two to three weeks, the hospital had virtually no money at all and although we have had a few releases [inmates] last week, that is still not adequate enough.”
In his opinion, “the implementation of the Mental Health Law would help the hospital’s finances because within the Mental Health Law, there are structures that ensure adequate financing.”
He indicated that he was hopeful that the President would put the necessary measures in place to ensure the implementation of the Mental Health Bill.
