Cameroon’s 85-year-old President Biya sworn in for seventh term

With just a day after 79 students and 1 headmaster were kidnapped from a school in the country’s restive English-speaking northwest region, Cameroon’s president, Paul Biya has been sworn in for a seventh term.

The 85-year-old, who has ruled the country for 36 years, pledged to uphold the “integrity” and “unity” of the country in a ceremony conducted by parliamentary speaker Cavaye Yeguie Djibril.

Biya’s re-election has been contested by opposition candidates, who alleged widespread irregularities, including ballot stuffing and voter intimidation. The Constitutional Court, however, upheld the result late last month, dismissing 18 claims of voter fraud.
