Yendi violence: Abudu Royal family demands arrest of Sangnarigu, Nyankpala chiefs

The Abudu Royal family is demanding the arrest of the Chief of Sangnarigu and Nyankpal Lana following two shooting incidents that marred the start of the funeral of  Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani II.

According to them, the two are responsible for the clashes in Yendi which led to the death of two persons and also left several others injured some days ago.

The Youth Secretary for the Abudu family, Mumuni Shaban, made the charge at the MbaDugu palace during a meeting with the press on Sunday.

“While we commend the security for containing the Friday security incident, we want to ask the REGSEC to as a matter of urgency arrest the Sannarigu chief, the Nyankpala chief and some others or they should be made to produce the hoodlums behind the two shooting incidents in Yendi,” he said to the press.

The family also expressed hope that the tensions will be handled objectively, amid a process that has also seen the Andanis question the fairness of the Committee of Eminent Kings that has mediated the chieftaincy dispute.

The Andani Royal family at a point withdrew from the Asantehene-led mediation process over contentions with the work the committee.

“We are however extraordinarily expectant that the committee of eminent chiefs will be fair and just to the two feuding factions to avoid future factional discord, hostilities and loss of life and properties.”

Initial violence halting funeral

The funeral was first held up on Thursday after a shooting incident that left one person dead and three injured.

The Thursday shooting was started when the Chief of Sangnarigu was entering Yendi with his entourage ahead of the funeral.

The following day, a similar shooting incident halted the funeral again, leaving close to 20 persons injured.

Six persons were arrested after the Friday eruption of violence.

The funeral rites of the late King eventually commenced at the New Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Sunday under heavy security.

The Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, was in the Yendi town on Saturday, and assured stakeholders that order would be maintained.

Every vehicle that enters the town is being searched to ensure no weapons are smuggled in for any attacks.
