Carpenter robbed off GHc9,800 by ‘fake’ security personnel

Police in the Eastern Region have begun investigations into a robbery incident reportedly involving men in police and military uniforms at Koforidua in the New Juaben Municipality.

The men robbed a carpenter who had just withdrawn GHc 8,500 from the Upper Manya Rural Bank and was on board a tricycle.

According to the police, the suspects who were driving a Hyundai Sonata, intercepted the tricycle at Anlo Town and told the carpenter he was under arrest and was needed at the Regional Police Headquarters.

But they ended up abandoning him in handcuffs at Bunso after robbing him of a total GHC 9, 800 cash and 2 mobile phones.

“According to the carpenter, he was joined in the tricycle later by three women and that upon reaching the new Gabson pharmacy near Dukes filling station, four men in a Hyundai sonata private car dressed in police and military uniforms crossed the tricycle, pulled out, handcuff, and dragged him into the sonata saying he was wanted at the Galloway police station for robbery. The suspects collected two mobile phones valued at Ghc 410.00, the Ghc 8,500.00 he withdrew at the bank and Ghc 1,300.00 which was in his pocket,” DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer told Citi News.

He said the robbers stripped the carpenter “naked, used his shirt to wrap his face and abandoned him along the Jumapo Bunso road.”

A taxi driver who found him assisted him to lodge a complaint at the police station where he was issued with a police medical form”.

“The Koforidua police upon receipt of this information visited the scene where eyewitnesses corroborated the story indicating they thought the men were security personnel because they were in uniforms. We have begun our investigations and we are calling on the general public to assist us with any information that can help us arrest the suspects,” the PRO said.

Fake military camp

This reported robbery follows the Kasoa Divisional Police Command closing down a fake military camp at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region.

The police also arrested 14 persons suspected to be fake military officers.

The Ojobi District Police Command later rounded up a middle-aged man believed to be behind the fake military camp.

A search conducted on the arrested individuals revealed that they had military bags, boots, uniform, ID cards, military caps, and other military accoutrements.
