The Asunafo North Municipal capital, Goaso, has been declared the regional capital of the newly created Ahafo Region, carved out of the then Bono Ahafo Region.
Ever since the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) got the endorsement of the people within the Ahafo area in the 2018 referendum to create the new region together with five others, there has been strong contention among the major towns in the area for the regional capital status.
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, February 13 named Goaso as the regional capital at a presentation ceremony at the Jubilee House to give effect to the newly created region.
In the presence of some chiefs and elders from Goaso, the president made the announcement and the presentation of the Constitutional Instrument, which gives the legal backing to the existence of the region.
Goaso is located between three major towns – Mim, Kukuom and Hwidiem – and has a very rich vegetation cover.
Surrounding towns, which were also in contention for regional capital status, include Bechem, Kenyasi, Mim, Kukuom and Hwidiem.
Goaso boasts as one of the food baskets of Ghana.
Earlier on Wednesday, the President also named Techiman the Bono East Region’s capital.
