We’ll cooperate with NPP on vigilantism dialogue – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed an invitation to it by the governing New Patriotic Party to hold a dialogue aimed at finding ways to disband vigilante groups aligned to both parties.

“If the NPP is ready now to disband and we are ready to all sit down and look at it. I can assure you that we will cooperate with the government’s directives and we will sit down as a political party to see how far we can go to resolve this matter,” National Organiser of the NDC, Joshua Akamba has said Eyewitness News on Tuesday.

The NPP has officially written to the NDC to invite it to a meeting to dialogue on vigilante groups in line with President Nana Akufo-Addo’s advice.

One of the points of contentions over a possible meeting between the two parties was the request of a presence of a third-party mediator, which the President described as disappointing.

But the NPP is open to a third party and said it would decide with the NDC on which stakeholders to invite to the dialogue.

Mr. Akamba even suggested that the third party should choose the meeting location.

“I am sure that we should be looking at them to choose a venue for all of us so that that they can get themselves to the mediation table… For us whatever decision is taken by whoever the mediators are, the NDC as a political party and its leadership will actually go by that,” he added.

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, the NPP Director of Communications, also spoke on Eyewitness Newsand said the NPP’s gesture was to foster trust between the two parties.

He explained that the NPP “was not about to impose anything on the NDC in this process.”

“They have asked for external mediations, the letters say we are not averse to that. We are asking them to propose and suggest a venue and a time, which means it is confidence building. We are willing to bend over backwards to trust the NDC to fix the venue and the time,” Mr. Asamoa added.
