VGMA19 brawl: Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy in police custody for questioning

Reggae and dancehall artistes Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are currently being held by the Accra Regional Police Command for Sunday dawn’s commotion at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).

It appears the two are in police custody in connection with Sunday’s brawl but it is not clear if they would be charged for any act.

The rivalry between the two artistes, who have been battling for supremacy, got nasty during the VGMAs, temporarily halting the hitherto an exciting event to celebrate Ghanaian musicians.

Stonebwoy pulled out a gun while on stage to pick the coveted award for the Reggae and Dancehall Artiste of the Year. His action follows rather unceremonious attitude of Shatta who mounted the stage with his ‘militants’ whilst Stonebwoy flanked by his Bhim Nation squad was about to address the enthusiastic crowd as has been the norm.

Armed military and police personnel had it tough quelling the chaotic situation that forced organisers of the event, Charterhouse to suddenly cut live transmission of the programme for close to an hour.

The motive for what many have described as a “rude” interruption by Shatta Wale born Charles Nii Armah Mensah is yet to be known, but disappointed as he appeared on the night, Shatta Wale left the Dome of the Accra International Conference Centre where the event was ongoing amidst jeers.

3news.com’s Komla Klutse told TV3 News360 on Sunday evening that he saw Shatta Wale being kept at the charge office of the regional police command. He also sighted the musician’s father.

Regional Director of Operations, ACP Kwesi Ofori later told journalists the two are “being questioned” by the police.

He noted that the actions of the security personnel at the event was “professional” and that enabled them to secure the venue to forestall any eventuality .

He said the police is currently investigating the incident and the two would be charged depending on the outcome of the investigation.
