Chereponi NHIS PRO for transporting ammunition

A joint Police and Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) operation in Yendi has led to the arrest of the Public Relations Officer for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the Chereponi district, one Mohammed Gushie, for carrying ten boxes containing 250 AAA cartridges.

Confirming the arrest to Citi News, the Divisional Police Commander for Yendi said they received information that a Tamale-Chereponi bound bus was carrying some ammunition and acted on it.

He said they found cartridges concealed in boxes upon a search when the bus got to Yendi barrier.

The suspect is currently in Police custody assisting in investigations.

The suspect is said to have denied knowledge of the items and said they were given to him by someone in Tamale to be given to another person in Chereponi and that there were invoices.

The police further said a search of his personal bag revealed copies of the invoices which he claimed were given to him to be given to another person in Chereponi.

Chereponi is currently a hotspot because of the recurrent land dispute between Konkombas and Chokosis.

There have been multiple arrests over recent clashes in the area which have led to the loss of life and property.

There is currently relative peace in the area with a strong security presence throughout the area.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Williams Ayamdo last Tuesday announced that more troops will be sent to the area to be stationed at vantage points in the area that may not have been totally secured yet.

This followed a visit to the area by a high powered inter-ethnic and inter-party delegation led by Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul following which both parties pledged to support the peace process.
