We listen: NPP drops affirmative action plan

He said following the announcement of the affirmative policy they have received a number of petitions and complaints from party members with some supporting the policy and others against it.“We have to be a listening party, a responsive party and we at the national headquarters are privy to several petitions with some supporting and some against decisions taken,” he added in an interview on Eyewitness News.

The National Council of the NPP on Wednesday differed the controversial affirmative action policy, which seeks to secure Parliamentary seats for female MPs as well as indigenous Gas from Ga Constituencies.

Announcement of the policy stirred mixed reactions from members of the party.

According to the NPP, the policy was deferred to enable them have extensive deliberations on it before it is approved.

Dropping the affirmative policy not wrong

Kwabena Agyepong explained that withdrawing the policy was not a wrong thing to do saying as “political parties have the latitude to be able to use their structures to react or respond to the feelings of the masses of their people.”

“…we believe in affirmative action, and we are on pulse to develop a comprehensive policy to achieve that, in the meantime, the decision to allow women only primaries to be skewed down, I think it is well within a political party to do so. That does not make the political party indecisive,” the NPP’s scribe insisted.
